12 May at 18:00 (GMT+3), the opening of the exhibition “HYBRIS. Hybrids and Monsters in Contemporary Art” will be streamed live at the Youth Educational Center of the State Hermitage in St. Petersburg. The exhibition “HYBRIS. Hybrids and Monsters in Contemporary Art”, which opens on 12 May 2017 at the exhibition hall of the Ca’ Foscari University as part of the parallel program of the Venice Biennale, tells of the unity and diversity of artistic phenomena. It is about similarity and differences, traditions and invasions of aggressive technology into the fragile human world, about the birth of new hybrid forms, about “other” cultures and social structures… Works by 19 artists from 7 countries are displayed here. Their work is connected with different historical, cultural and social realities: the earliest works date from over 40 years ago, while some of the projects were prepared especially for this exhibition. There are many differences between them, but there are also certain similarities that fit them into the context of vital problems of modern world culture. These works tell of identity and diversity, the sublime and ignoble aspects of human nature, the total penetration of new technologies into people’s lives, the attitude to “us” and “them”, “our people” and “enemies”, monsters and hybrids, the infinity and diversity of the existence of living forms.
The exhibition is divided into three parts:
- Hybrid space;
- “I” is an “Other”. “Hybrids” and “Monsters”;
- Metamorphoses and Metaphors.
Evidently, the main ideological source that unites the exhibition space is the revolutionary achievements of the Russian avant-garde, represented by Kazimir Malevich and his “Black Square”.

Выставка ‘Гибриды и монстры’, открывающаяся 12 мая 2017 года в выставочном зале Унивеситета Ка Фоскари в рамках параллельной программы Венецианской биеннале, рассказывает о единстве и многообразии художественных явлений. Она – о сходстве и различиях, о традициях и вторжениях в хрупкий человеческий мир агрессивных технологий, о рождении новых гибридных форм, о ‘других’ культурных и социальных структурах… Здесь представлены произведения 19 художников из 7 стран. Их творчество связано с разными историческими, культурными и социальными реалиями: самые ранние работы были созданы более 40 лет назад, часть проектов подготовлена специально к этой выставке. Между ними много различий, но есть и некая общность, вписывающая их в контекст актуальных проблем современной мировой культуры. Эти произведения рассказывают об идентичности и многообразии, возвышенном и низменном человеческой натуры, о тотальности проникновения новых технологий в жизнь человека, об отношении к ‘своим’ и ‘чужим’, ‘нашим’ и ‘врагам’, монстрам и гибридам, бесконечности и разнообразии существования живых форм.
Выставка разделена на три части:
- Гибридное пространство;
- Я -‘Другой’. ‘Гибриды’ и ‘Монстры’;
- Метаморфозы и Метафоры.
Очевидно, что главным идейным источником, объединяющим единое выставочное пространство, являются революционные достижения русского авангарда в лице Казимира Малевича и его ‘Черного квадрата’.
