Art Data: New Frontiers in Curating, Preserving, Displaying and Connecting Digital Based Arts is a part of the Third Summit on New Media Art Archiving and brings together participants from diverse fields including artists, curators, researchers, and collectors.
The impetus for the discussion is a number of questions shaped by the needs of independent organizations and professionals who work across contemporary media art. The conversation aims to explore interrelationship between archives and artistic practices which, as Janine Randerson argues, «form networks across time and distance and resist notions of center and periphery by treating data sets as part of environmental and cultural ecologies». At the same time, participants propose ideas and methods that make archives useful as a resource for reflecting vulnerable histories and ever-changing nature of technology–based arts.
Janine Randerson’s presentation provides insight into Aotearoa Digital Arts Network and the Len Lye Foundation Archive, community-based interdisciplinary platforms tending to indigenous cultures and ethos and expending outwards. Anna Frants tells the story of CYLAND Audio and Video Archives as alternative artist-run forms of collecting, preserving, and exhibiting experimental sound and video. Alexandra Dementieva reveals the ways in which artists reinvent their personal archives, creating multi-page manuals, zines or artist books to mediate and re-contextualize works based on technology.

ABOUT ISEA
ISEA, a major event on the global electronic art scene, aims to strengthen the dialogue between artists, researchers, engineers, designers and entrepreneurs from the cultural and creative industries who participate in the advances of research and creation. This multidisciplinary event is open to both specialists and the general public.
Each year, the event is held in a different country. The 28th edition of ISEA, co-organised by Le Cube Garges and L’École des Arts Décoratifs (ENSAD), took place in Paris at the Forum des images from 16 to 21 May 2023, as well as through an artistic programme spread over 80 partner cultural venues throughout France in spring-summer 2023.
The Third Summit on New Media Art Archiving is organized by the archivists of ISEA in co-operation with archivists of SIGGRAPH, Ars Electronica, ADA, ZKM, FILE, Media Art History & Memoduct Posthuman archive. The Summit is supported by ISEA2023, ISEA International, the SIGGRAPH Digital Arts Community and the Creative Industries Fund NL.
