CYLAND MediaArtLab participates in the exhibition project “Casts” at the Scientific-Research Museum of the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. Developed in cooperation with the NCCA, the project reminds us that contemporary art does not always oppose traditions, but rather refers to the eternal harbor of classical specimens, which has long become the base of images. The artists, as shown at the exhibition, may agree with this idea or, rather, deny, challenge it.
The exhibition project “Casts” offers more questions than answers: how does a work of art end up in history, can we say that the original is more valuable than a copy, and what is the relationship between modernity and tradition – is modern art only a copy from the classical original? The exhibition’s structure embodies two approaches to history: a linear classical interpretation expressed in the Museum exposition, and anachronistic stories of the present, which are distributed across the Museum space and, in turn, interact with the nearby casts.
