Until February 26, Moscow Electromuseum is hosting an exhibition of multi-channel sound works «Russian Sound Art Showcase». Among the projects presented at the exhibition is the work “8×8” by Sergey Komarov, curator and artist of CYLAND Media Art Lab.
The curator of the exhibition is Boris Shershenkov, engineer and sound artist, media archeologist and constructor of musical instruments, participant of the Cyfest media art festival.
“8х8” explores the effect of feedback in audio sequences as well as the process leading up to self-oscillation. The artwork is an object made up of two Brüel & Kjær four-channel measuring tape recorders. All eight channels of the recorders are connected in a chain, and the signals passing through them are in a cyclic sound sequence, moving from the train-effect popular in dub music to radical noise distortion recorded at 381mm/sec and played back at 38.1mm/sec.
In this artwork, the usual functioning of multi-channel recorders becomes a tool for creating a moving sound picture, which, by slowing down, allows you to listen to and observe the hidden nuances of audio refraction and transformation.
Russian Sound Art Showcase (RSAS) – is a standardized exhibition of multichannel works of Russian sound artists, who are currently active in scene of mainly Moscow and Saint-Petersburg. Most of them are centered around the SoundArtist.ru ( aka SA)) ) community. The first version of RSAS was shown in 2015 at Ars Electronica festival in Linz Austria. It became the first ever collective exhibition of Russian sound artists abroad. The RSAS in New York – was the second one. It was shown at New York Electronic Arts Festival (USA) in 2019 and was supported by Harvestworks CDA.
